A NatCen survey reported by Sky News found that 74% of Britons view the United States as a serious threat to global peace, up from 36% in 2024. The US ranked above China at 62%, but below Russia at 89%, while 78% cited Israel and 75% Iran. Research author Sophia Gaston said Britain had experienced “a psychological shift” amid conflicts and doubts about American leadership. Foreign policy and national security are now central public concerns.

A survey has found that almost three-quarters of Britons see the United States as a serious threat to global peace, more than double the figure recorded two years ago.

According to the National Centre for Social Research’s British Social Attitudes survey, reported by Sky News, 74% of respondents viewed the US as a serious threat, up from 36% in 2024.

The finding follows President Donald Trump’s midterm-election setback, after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. Trump said it was “largely true” that the Iran war, a major voter concern, contributed to the defeat.

The research placed the US above China, which 62% of Britons considered a threat to peace, but below Russia at 89%. Israel was viewed as a threat by 78%, while 75% cited Iran.

Report author Sophia Gaston said there had been “a psychological shift in Britain” driven by “war in Europe, instability in the Middle East, strategic competition with China and doubts about American leadership”.
