TG Omori opens up on kidney failure, says N1m salary can’t cover dialysis

Nigerian music video director ThankGod Omori, popularly known as TG Omori, has detailed the financial burden of kidney failure treatment, saying a N1 million monthly salary may not cover dialysis costs.

According to PUNCH, Omori spoke on the Afropolitan podcast about his experience undergoing dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant.

He said dialysis costs between N50,000 and N70,000 per session at some hospitals, while treatment at a private facility cost him between N150,000 and N200,000. Patients may require three sessions weekly, pushing expenses to about N500,000 or more.

Omori said the cost makes treatment extremely difficult for low-income Nigerians, adding that even someone earning N1 million monthly could struggle to sustain the required care.

The director also recounted waiting about a year for a transplant and estimated that treatment during the period cost roughly N31 million, excluding additional tests, medication and complications.

He said his brother donated a kidney after a nine-month search for a donor, but doctors later discovered that his body was not accepting the organ. His brother was left living with one kidney despite the unsuccessful procedure.

Omori said the experience changed his perspective on money, noting that although wealth cannot guarantee happiness, financial resources can help patients gain more time during serious illness.

The filmmaker first publicly disclosed his kidney problems in 2024, when he revealed that he had undergone a transplant and shared a photograph of himself receiving hospital treatment.

Omori, one of Nigeria’s prominent music video directors, has worked with several leading artistes. His latest comments highlight the heavy financial pressures faced by kidney patients requiring regular dialysis and transplant care across Nigeria’s healthcare system each passing year.
