“They said they will kill me” – Sowore recounts Ekiti thug attack
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has spoken out about an attack on him in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Daily Post reports.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Sowore said thugs attacked him in broad daylight at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, where he had gone to meet supporters.
“They beat me like a criminal. They came from nowhere, about 20 of them, armed with sticks and bottles. They said they will kill me if I come to Ekiti again,” he said.
He said the attackers were captured on CCTV, but alleged that the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken the footage to cover up the incident. He said he suffered injuries to his face and body and was rushed to hospital.
Sowore accused the Ekiti State government of sponsoring the attack to silence opposition voices. The state government has not yet responded to the allegation.
He said he would not be intimidated. “I am not afraid. They can beat me, they can arrest me, but they cannot stop me from speaking the truth,” he added.
The attack has drawn reactions on social media, with many Nigerians condemning it and calling for the arrest of those behind it.
