“They send us to fight terrorists with inferior weapons”: Niger vigilantes blame govt as 8 commanders killed

Local vigilantes fighting terrorists in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State have accused the state government of sending them into combat with inferior weapons and inadequate ammunition.

According to SaharaReporters, the allegations followed attacks across Konkoso and Kabe wards between September 18 and 22, which reportedly killed at least 12 people, including eight vigilante commanders and four civilians.

More than 40 people, mostly vigilantes, were also reportedly injured.

A vigilante said terrorists possessed sophisticated firearms while fighters lacked adequate weapons, ammunition and protective equipment. He also alleged that informants within communities were revealing vigilante movements and positions to the attackers.

The violence has forced residents to flee their homes, while farmers and traders have been unable to move freely.
