Thousands of legal immigrants, refugees stripped of Medicaid benefits
Thousands of legal immigrants and refugees across the United States are losing Medicaid coverage following changes introduced under President Donald Trump’s tax and spending legislation.
According to CNN, the changes have affected people including Teresita Morales’ partner, a legal immigrant receiving nursing home care after suffering a stroke.
His Medicaid coverage is being terminated alongside that of thousands of other legally present immigrants and refugees affected by the new eligibility restrictions.
Medicaid provides health coverage to millions of low-income Americans and eligible residents, including support for long-term nursing home care.
The loss of coverage could leave affected families facing substantial medical and long-term care expenses or searching for alternative assistance.
The changes stem from provisions in the legislation known as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which altered eligibility for several federal programmes.
The development comes as other changes to federal healthcare programmes take effect across the country, affecting access to government-funded medical coverage for different groups of residents nationwide.
