TikTok distances itself from access restrictions across northern states

Social media platform TikTok has denied imposing restrictions on users in parts of Northern Nigeria following weeks of reported access difficulties.

According to Nairametrics, the company disclosed this in a statement on Monday, October 12, 2026, amid complaints from users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states.

A TikTok spokesperson said:

“We are aware of reports regarding restricted access to our platform in certain parts of Nigeria. We can confirm that this restriction was not implemented by TikTok.”

“We are actively engaging with relevant stakeholders to resolve the situation and remain committed to ensuring access for our community.”

The disruptions, reportedly beginning September 14, have prevented some users from loading videos, refreshing feeds and uploading content.

Some affected users reportedly restored access through virtual private networks.

Meanwhile, 12 civil society organisations have demanded investigations by telecommunications regulators and relevant government agencies.

The cause remains undetermined, with technical faults, network problems and deliberate restrictions among the possibilities.
