Trump allegedly plans quiet exit for Hegseth to save face
President Donald Trump may be considering a new role for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to appease voters angry over the Iran War, Daily Beast reported. Despite his denials, Trump is reportedly weighing firing the Pentagon chief, with one option being a safe Republican Senate seat that becomes available in January.
Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn won the state’s governor’s race on Tuesday and plans to wait until after January 3 to name her successor. “Watch what happens with Hegseth,” former Democratic senator Claire McCaskill said. “It will not surprise me if Trump wants to dump Hegseth before January. And the easiest way to do that is to get Marsha Blackburn to appoint him as senator in Tennessee.”
Asked Wednesday, Trump said: “I think he’s doing a very good job, and I actually think he’d be very popular if he did that.” He told ABC News on Thursday he intended to keep Hegseth. Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has urged his removal.
