Greenland deal gives US permanent basing and overflight rights

President Donald Trump has struck a sweeping agreement with Denmark and Greenland granting the United States permanent military basing rights on the Arctic island, according to a report by Fox News.

Under the deal, the U.S. gains permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland, along with the ability to build additional military installations without needing approval from Denmark or Greenland, though it would consult with them. The agreement bars China, Russia and other non-NATO countries from establishing bases or stationing troops on the island, and restricts adversary investment in sensitive sectors such as telecommunications, ports and critical minerals.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the pact a “huge win” that “permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer.” The deal, which has no expiration date, stops short of transferring sovereignty to Washington but is designed to remain valid even if Greenland later becomes independent.

The agreement expands on the existing U.S.-Greenland defense relationship dating to 1951, which includes the Pituffik Space Base. Officials said months of quiet negotiations beginning in February, involving Rubio and adviser Stephen Miller, produced a deal that also serves Denmark and Greenland’s own security interests, given their limited capacity to defend the island alone.
