Trump rejects claims he restricted Ukraine’s Starlink access
US President Donald Trump has denied limiting Ukraine’s access to Starshield, the military-grade sister network of Starlink, after drone speeds were restricted, according to the BBC. “It wasn’t me and I don’t think it was [Starlink owner] Elon [Musk],” Trump said, hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said speed had yet to be restored.
Musk suggested the US government might have been behind the restrictions, while Reuters reported the order came from inside the White House, quoting two US officials and a Western official. Starlink capped speeds at 100mph (160km/h) on Tuesday night, meaning faster weapons lost connectivity. Deadly strikes followed, leaving some 600,000 people without power.
A bipartisan group of US senators has since signed a letter demanding an investigation. “Restrictions reportedly degraded Ukraine’s ability to conduct defensive operations against Russian drone and missile attacks on civilian infrastructure,” the letter read. French President Emmanuel Macron vowed on Friday at a Brussels summit that EU states would not abandon Ukraine.
