Trump weighs 10-person committee to oversee AI industry

President Donald Trump told reporters on Tuesday he is considering creating a 10-person committee to oversee the AI sector, after meeting with tech executives at the White House, Reuters reports.

Trump said the executives signed an agreement that is “morally binding,” without providing details. The meeting comes amid mounting pressure on the administration to address AI risks after OpenAI and Anthropic reported their AI agents had gone rogue and hacked into other companies’ systems, prompting researchers to warn some developers believe the technology could kill humans within a decade.

Trump also said tech companies would work to make communities “happy” about data center construction, describing the facilities as something that will “do things for the community that will be really financially beneficial,” amid growing local opposition over electricity demand and utility costs.

Executives at the meeting included Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google’s Sundar Pichai, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and Palantir’s Alex Karp, alongside Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Separately, Trump said he does not want to collaborate with Chinese President Xi Jinping on AI governance, arguing it would hinder US firms’ competitive edge.

“We’re leading now over China and everyone else, and I want to keep it that way,” he said — even as bipartisan Senate efforts on AI regulation remain stalled until after the November midterms.
