Two killed, over 4,000 displaced as flood submerges 18 Nasarawa communities
At least two people have died, while over 4,000 residents have been displaced following severe flooding that submerged 18 communities in Nasarawa State.
According to Daily Trust, the flooding affected several communities in Doma Local Government Area, destroying houses, farmlands and properties worth millions of naira.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Nawani Aboki, confirmed the deaths on Monday, describing the disaster as a major humanitarian crisis.
Residents said rising water levels from the River Benue caused widespread destruction, forcing families to relocate to safer areas.
The Director-General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, Benjamin Akwash, disclosed that relief materials were being prepared for displaced residents.
Governor Abdullahi Sule has directed relevant agencies to assess the damage and coordinate emergency assistance.
Authorities warned residents against returning prematurely, citing concerns over possible additional water releases from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam.
The government assured victims of humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter and building materials, while urging vulnerable communities to relocate to higher ground.
