United Bank for Africa (UBA) has expanded its digital payment offerings by enabling Google Pay for eligible Visa and Mastercard users, providing customers with a faster, more convenient way to pay using compatible devices, P.M. News reports.

The move allows eligible cardholders to make contactless payments at supported terminals without carrying physical cards. Google Pay launched in Nigeria on October 27, supporting both local and international transactions wherever the service is accepted.

UBA’s Directorate Head, Cards, Orry Seem, said the initiative was designed to simplify everyday payments and align with customers’ changing lifestyles. “Our customers live busy lives, and the way they pay should make those lives easier. For many of them, the phone is the first thing they reach for, so it makes sense for it to become their wallet too,” she said, adding that UBA was proud to be the first bank in the country enabled on Google Pay.

The service complements UBA’s existing digital offerings, including its mobile banking app, internet banking and LEO, its AI-powered virtual banking assistant. UBA’s Group Head, Brands, Marketing and Corporate Communications, Alero Ladipo, said the development reflected the bank’s commitment to expanding access to digital payment solutions, noting that early adoption of global platforms would strengthen UBA’s digital banking services going forward.

UBA operates in 20 African countries as well as the UK, US, France and the UAE, serving over 45 million customers globally with a focus on financial inclusion and technology-driven banking solutions.
