UK Gen Z workers ditch pensions as living costs soar

Young workers in the United Kingdom are increasingly withdrawing from workplace pension schemes as rising living costs put pressure on their finances.

According to PUNCH, citing the BBC, Gen Z and millennial workers are prioritising immediate expenses, raising concerns about their retirement incomes.

Hassan Nassar, a 26-year-old trainee doctor, stopped contributing about £430 monthly to his NHS pension in September to support a sick relative, save for a home and meet rent and student loan payments.

“People will say, you’re silly, look at what you’ll be missing out in the future. But I need to look at what I’d be losing now if I didn’t opt out,” Nassar said.

The UK Department for Work and Pensions said 22.6 million eligible people contribute to workplace pensions, while 2.5 million do not, highlighting the growing financial strain on younger workers today.

Pensions Minister Torsten Bell warned: “There is a danger tomorrow’s retirees are on track for lower private pension incomes than today’s.”
