US delists Syria from state sponsors of terrorism

Share:

The United States has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, ending a decades-old designation that had restricted investment and financial activity.

According to Vanguard, the State Department also revoked the designation of al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, as a global terrorist organisation, while the Treasury Department announced sanctions relief.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the move was aimed at encouraging investment and promoting political and economic stability in Syria.

Washington, however, said the delisting would not weaken its commitment to countering terrorism or holding bad actors in Syria accountable under existing US laws.
