US, Iran set for separate talks with mediators Monday or Tuesday, official says

The United States and Iran are set to hold separate talks with Qatari mediators on Monday or Tuesday in a fresh push to end the war, an official briefed on the negotiations told Reuters.

The talks will focus on an amended version of the seven-day proposal Iran presented last week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will meet the mediators in New York, according to Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency, though it was not clear who would represent the US side.

Iran’s plan calls for an end to hostilities in Iran and Lebanon, the unfreezing of Iranian assets, an end to oil sanctions and the lifting of the US blockade, after which the Strait of Hormuz would reopen.

President Donald Trump rejected the plan on Saturday but said he expects more talks this week, leaving the outcome hinging on whether the mediators can bridge the gap.
