The US and Nigeria say they will expand intelligence sharing and joint operations against sextortion and romance scams, citing 41 extraditions since 2022.

The United States and Nigeria have intensified efforts to combat sextortion, romance scams and other transnational cybercrimes, according to a US Embassy statement reported by Punch.

The renewed commitment followed a visit to Abuja by Michael Gonzales, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. He met officials of the EFCC, the Office of the National Security Adviser, the NDLEA and the Nigeria Police Force.

The embassy said Nigeria extradited two suspects to the US in August over sextortion cases linked to the deaths of American minors. It said the FBI had worked with the EFCC on 41 extraditions since 2022, including five in 2026, against five between 2012 and 2021.

Gonzales called for “the process to become faster, more routine and proactive.”

The statement added that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received over 50,000 reports of sextortion in 2025, about 137 a day.
