The United States has retained Nigeria under its Level 3 travel advisory, urging Americans to reconsider visits over insecurity and healthcare concerns.

According to the US Department of State, as reported by The Sun, the advisory, issued June 12, 2026, cites terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, civil unrest and inadequate healthcare services.

Several Nigerian states, including Borno, Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Plateau and Zamfara, remain under the stricter Level 4 classification, “Do Not Travel”.

Meanwhile, Washington has placed 11 African countries under nationwide Level 4 warnings. They are Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, Mali, Niger, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

The warnings reflect varying security and health risks across the affected countries.

US authorities cautioned that emergency assistance could be limited in dangerous locations, advising travellers to obtain appropriate medical insurance.

Nigeria previously faced similar warnings in 2022 and 2025 over terrorism, kidnapping and insecurity.

The latest advisory maintains restrictions in several high-risk Nigerian regions.
