US to make parents prove citizenship for kids’ passports
The U.S. State Department has proposed requiring parents applying for children’s passports to prove their own citizenship or immigration status, as part of President Donald Trump’s latest push to restrict birthright citizenship.
According to a Reuters report, the draft guidance implements Trump’s August 6 executive order targeting “birth tourism,” after the Supreme Court struck down his earlier, broader attempt in a 6-3 ruling.
Parents would need to submit documents such as passports, birth certificates, or immigration records. Lawyers are already challenging the order in federal court, seeking to block its implementation.
