US withdraws all B-1 bombers from UK base after suspected terror plot
The United States has withdrawn all its B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford in Britain following heightened security concerns over a suspected terrorist plot targeting the military base.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the aircraft were returning to their home bases in the United States.
RAF Fairford has served as an important base for American bomber operations during the conflict with Iran.
The withdrawal follows the arrests of six people in connection with suspected terrorist activity involving the base. All have since been released on bail while investigations continue.
British counter-terrorism authorities are examining possible foreign-state involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there are “strong indications” Iran played a role, while Tehran has denied involvement.
Security has also been tightened at other US military installations in Britain.
The redeployment does not mean American forces are withdrawing from operations against Iran, with the US maintaining substantial military assets elsewhere.
