USA: Nearly half of adults under 30 live with parents…

Nearly half of Americans under 30 lived with a parent in 2025, highlighting a significant shift in young adults’ living arrangements amid financial pressures.

According to MarketWatch, 49% of adults under 30 lived with a parent last year, up 12 percentage points from 2019, according to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking.

The trend comes as young Americans face high housing costs, education debt and difficulties entering the labour market. Economist Geoffrey Sanzenbacher, who authored the MarketWatch analysis, said young adults living with parents tend to accumulate less wealth, particularly housing wealth.

The research also found that these adults are less likely to marry and have children, although the reasons behind those patterns remain uncertain.

While housing conditions contribute to the increase, Sanzenbacher noted that rental-market changes alone do not explain the full rise. He said further research is needed to understand the other factors driving the trend.
