Valverde stunner fires Real Madrid To Champions League history in Comeback win over AEK
Real Madrid made Champions League history on Wednesday after Federico Valverde’s stunning stoppage-time strike secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over AEK Athens in the league phase.
According to Sports Mole, the Spanish giants twice came from behind before Valverde struck in the 92nd minute to complete the comeback.
Aboubakary Koita opened the scoring for AEK in the 12th minute, but Jude Bellingham equalised in the 32nd minute. Stavros Pilios restored the hosts’ advantage in the 75th minute before Kylian Mbappe levelled three minutes later.
Valverde’s late winner took Real Madrid’s tally of Champions League stoppage-time goals to 49, the highest in the competition’s history.
“It was a very tough and complicated match, just as we expected. I think we imposed our control, but we had difficulty in creating chances. I’d like to congratulate the team on their efforts and hard work; let’s continue working in this manner,” Valverde told reporters.
The victory maintained Real Madrid’s 100 per cent record, giving Jose Mourinho’s side 12 points from four matches.
