Whether Tinubu wins or loses in 2027, Yorubas are done for…
Retired Naval Commodore Kunle Olawunmi has warned that the Yoruba people face serious political consequences regardless of whether President Bola Tinubu wins or loses the 2027 presidential election.
Olawunmi, a former Deputy Director of Defence Administration at Defence Headquarters, made the assertion in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, while discussing Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria’s political structure and Yoruba self-determination.
According to him, Tinubu’s presidency has damaged the political standing of the Yoruba and could make it difficult for another Yoruba politician to emerge as Nigeria’s president for decades.
“I don’t mind if he wins or loses; that is not my issue. Because whether he wins this election, and I want you to quote me, whether he wins or loses this election, it is a loss to the Yorubas,” Olawunmi said.
He argued that even if Tinubu secures another term and remains in office until 2031, the political consequences of his administration would continue to affect the South-West.
“Let’s say he wins this upcoming election and rules till 2031, that is the end of Yoruba leadership in this country. The damage, the destruction, the injury is too deep. Yorubas cannot come up again and say they want to rule this country now,” he said.
Olawunmi claimed Yoruba self-determination offered a way out, urging Tinubu to facilitate the emergence of a Yoruba nation.
He reiterated his warning when asked whether Yoruba voters should support Tinubu because of shared ethnicity.
“I say vote for him, we are done; don’t vote for him, we are done. We are already dead,” he said.
Olawunmi maintained that his position went beyond electoral politics, arguing that Yoruba people should consider the long-term political implications of Tinubu’s presidency and Nigeria’s current constitutional arrangement.
