Yemen conflict escalates as Houthis, government forces clash in Taiz
Fighting has intensified across Yemen, with airstrikes hitting the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa, after fierce clashes erupted around the strategic city of Taiz.
According to The New York Times, Houthi-run Al-Masirah television reported strikes on Sanaa, Taiz and other provinces, blaming what it called “Saudi aggression.”
Forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognised government confirmed striking “high-value targets” in Sanaa but provided no further details.
Government military officer Col. Abdul Basit al-Baher said the Houthis launched one of their most aggressive attacks in years around Taiz, triggering “fierce, simultaneous clashes” across dozens of fronts.
More than 800 people have been killed since fighting resumed, according to the World Health Organization, while thousands have been injured or displaced.
UN envoy Hans Grundberg said fighting had “significantly intensified” in Taiz and urged the Houthis to halt their offensive.
The World Food Program said more than 150,000 people have been displaced in recent weeks as Yemen’s humanitarian crisis worsens amid renewed hostilities nationwide.
