160 dead, 647 missing as devastating floods hit Nepal, Tibet

At least 160 people have died and 647 remain missing after catastrophic floods, mud and debris swept through Himalayan valleys in Nepal and Tibet, triggering major search-and-rescue operations.

According to PUNCH, Nepal recorded 157 deaths, while three were reported in Tibet. Hundreds of tourists, pilgrims, residents and officials remain unaccounted for, including more than 100 Indian nationals.

Scientists are investigating whether an ice avalanche triggered the disaster, which occurred despite an apparent absence of heavy rainfall.

In Nepal, at least 19 vehicle bridges and about 40 kilometres of roads were destroyed, alongside schools and hydropower facilities.

The Nepalese Army has deployed 12 helicopters and established a temporary hospital. At least 114 people have been airlifted to safety, while 25 seriously injured survivors were evacuated to Kathmandu for treatment.
