20 feared killed as illegal mining pit collapses in Taraba
At least five people have been confirmed dead while about 20 others, including women and children, are feared killed or trapped after an illegal mining pit collapsed at Mayo-Kam community in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State on Thursday.
The incident occurred during excavation by artisanal miners, with residents saying victims were buried under the debris. A resident, Saidu Baba Bali, confirmed the incident to Vanguard.
Police spokesperson, Victor Mshelizah, said rescue teams had recovered five bodies, while the actual casualty figure remained unknown.
“The actual number of casualties has not yet been fully established, but our teams have recovered five bodies from the site so far.
“Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate and evacuate any remaining persons who may still be trapped underneath the debris.”
