The new “public charge” policy takes effect Friday, September 18, allowing immigration officials to weigh a broader range of public benefits, including Medicaid, food assistance and housing support, reversing a narrower approach adopted under the Biden administration.

The administration says the policy ensures immigrants remain financially self-sufficient.
