28 State Assemblies back state police bill, NASS set to send it to Tinubu
Twenty-eight State Houses of Assembly have approved the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police in Nigeria, Vanguard reports. The approval exceeds the constitutionally required threshold of 24 states, representing two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly, paving the way for the bill’s transmission to President Bola Tinubu for assent.
Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. The Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill was transmitted to the state legislatures on September 16, 2026, and they were initially given 30 days, ending October 15, to respond. Ogunlana said his office would continue receiving reports until the bill is transmitted for presidential assent.
Ogunlana said: “Following the receipt and verification of the reports, the Office confirms that 28 State Houses of Assembly have approved the Bill.” He said the National Assembly verified the reports and accompanying votes and proceedings to establish their authenticity. He added that Section 9 does not expressly prescribe a third reading.
