30 Killed, 50 houses burned as gunmen attack Plateau community while residents prepared for church
No fewer than 30 people have been killed and over 50 houses, churches, shops and food barns destroyed after more than 100 armed gunmen stormed the Jwak Maitumbi community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday morning as residents were heading to church.
As reported by Daily Post, youth leader Lonji Zuhumnan said the attackers arrived at 7:30am with sophisticated weapons, shooting sporadically for several hours while residents fled. Crops on farmlands were also destroyed during the assault.
“While the assailants were having a field day, frantic calls made to security personnel in Mangu were futile as the soldiers did not come until the attackers had finished their mission and fled,” Zuhumnan said.
The attack follows a pattern of repeated security force non-response documented across Plateau, Zamfara and Benue states in recent weeks, raising deepening questions about military deployment and response protocols in Nigeria’s conflict-affected communities.
