Okpebholo faces backlash over UK-Nigeria fuel price comparison

Share:

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has faced criticism after saying Nigerians should appreciate paying about N1,400 to N1,500 for a litre of petrol because it costs over N3,000 in the United Kingdom.

According to Daily Post, Okpebholo made the comparison while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State.

“We are doing very well here because what we are seeing in Nigeria today is a reform. The reform that is ongoing is a very difficult one, and President Bola Tinubu is working to stabilise the country’s economy,” he said.

Critics argued that comparing petrol prices without considering differences in wages and purchasing power was misleading.

The Allied Peoples Movement also demanded Okpebholo’s resignation, describing his remarks as “reckless and irresponsible.”

Labour unionist Abayomi Idowu similarly criticised the comparison, asking: “How can anybody in his right senses compare the fuel price in Nigeria and the UK?”
