NYPD refuses to send security detail with Mamdani’s wife on Syria, Lebanon trip
The NYPD is declining to provide a security detail for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, during her September trip to Syria and Lebanon. This contradicts an earlier statement from Mamdani’s office claiming the department had “strongly recommended” the detail.
An NYPD spokesperson said officers aren’t sent to countries with Level 4 travel advisories for discretionary personal trips. Both Syria and Lebanon remain on the State Department’s “Do Not Travel” list due to terrorism risks. Mamdani later called the earlier claim a “miscommunication.”
