Nigeria religious leaders sign harmony pact months after Trump remarks
More than 50 Muslim and Christian leaders signed an interfaith peace accord in Abuja, according to Reuters, launching a body to promote religious harmony months after U.S. President Donald Trump called Nigeria a “disgraced country” over alleged treatment of Christians.
Organized by the Saudi-based Muslim World League, the pact drew Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and three northern governors.
Faith leaders pledged to curb hate speech and divisive rhetoric ahead of Nigeria’s January 2027 election, where religion is expected to again shape political dynamics amid the country’s near-even Muslim-Christian population split.
