Students losing ability to think…
Teachers and cognitive experts are warning that students’ reliance on AI for writing assignments is eroding their ability to think critically, according to a Futurism report citing the New York Times. Psychologist Ronald Kellogg said writing builds working memory, planning skills and metacognition, comparing essay drafting to the mental exertion of digging a ditch.
An MIT study found AI users showed lower brain activity and struggled to recall content they had “written.” Writing expert Steve Graham warned no part of the process can be outsourced without cost. Schools are responding by returning to pencil-and-paper exams and banning devices in some courses.
