Premier League panel rules Sunderland penalty against Arsenal was incorrect

A Premier League review panel has unanimously ruled that the penalty awarded against Arsenal in their 2-0 win at Sunderland was incorrect. According to The Independent, referee John Brooks penalised Ezri Konsa for holding Dan Ballard during a corner, but David Raya subsequently saved Enzo Le Fee’s spot-kick.

The five-person Key Match Incidents panel concluded that Ballard had also held Konsa, causing both players to fall. However, the panel voted 3-2 that VAR Stuart Attwell was correct not to intervene because the decision did not meet the clear-and-obvious-error threshold. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had strongly criticised the original decision after the match.
