10 injured as car crashes into Rugby fans in Australia
Ten people, including children, were injured after an 18-year-old driver crashed into a crowd of rugby league fans in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, according to Vanguard.
Thousands of supporters had gathered to farewell the Newcastle Knights before their grand final against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday when the driver, reportedly “driving erratically”, lost control.
Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris said: “He was revving the car, he was excited, he was a supporter, he was there for the joy of the moment. Somehow he lost control of the car… and he’s gone into the crowd.”
A five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were critically injured, while two other children were also hurt. The driver was taken into custody.
New South Wales Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison said: “One person made a decision in a split second that put everyone at risk.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “my thoughts are with everyone injured or involved in the horrible incident this morning in Newcastle”.
