Premium Times investigation unmasks fake professor steering governance at Nigerian university
An investigation by PREMIUM TIMES has revealed that Anthony Kila, the Pro-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), has falsely claimed the title of professor.
Appointed in August 2025 to head the university’s governing council, Mr Kila has long presented himself publicly as a widely published scholar, jurist, and “Jean Monnet Professor of Strategy and Development.” He has routinely been addressed as a professor across various Nigerian television and newspaper interviews.
However, findings by PREMIUM TIMES indicate that no recognised academic institution has ever awarded him a professorial rank. When questioned regarding the origins of his academic title, Mr Kila claimed the rank was conferred on him by the European Centre for Advanced and Professional Studies (ECAPS). The investigation established that this institution is non-existent outside of his own personal profile.
When contacted regarding the findings, a representative for Michael and Cecilia Ibru University maintained that the institution lacked evidence disproving Mr Kila’s credentials.
Speaking on behalf of the university, an unnamed spokesperson stated:
“We don’t debate issues. You can go up with whatever you are going up with. If there’s a need to respond, we will respond when we see the article.”
As pro-chancellor, Mr Kila leads the university’s governing council, which oversees overall administration, policy execution, and financial assets. The revelation raises broader concerns regarding academic vetting procedures within Nigeria’s higher education system and the legitimacy of qualifications claimed by top university officials.
