Xabi Alonso identifies his preferred Chelsea midfield pairing

Xabi Alonso has identified Moises Caicedo and Reece James as his preferred central-midfield partnership at Chelsea, although the pair have yet to play together in his system. According to The Chelsea Chronicle, Athletic reporter Liam Twomey said Caicedo’s return would be crucial to unlocking James’ qualities in Alonso’s double pivot.

Chelsea have largely used James alongside Romeo Lavia this season, while Caicedo has been sidelined. James is also a doubt for Saturday’s meeting with Bournemouth, although he has a better chance of featuring. Alonso is reportedly keen for Caicedo to provide defensive cover and allow James greater freedom with the ball.
