‘Less than 300 psychiatrists serving Nigeria’s 220million population’: Group blasts Akpabio over call to jail suicide attempt survivors
Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his opposition to a bill seeking to decriminalise attempted suicide in Nigeria.
According to SaharaReporters, CODWA said criminalising survivors could deepen stigma, discourage people from seeking medical help and worsen the country’s mental health challenges.
The group backed the bill sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, which passed second reading in the Senate on Tuesday and proposes medical assessment, treatment, crisis helplines and other support for survivors.
Reacting to Akpabio’s position, CODWA cited his remark: “If you attempt suicide, make sure you die. Anyone who attempts and fails will go to jail.”
The organisation said attempted suicide should be treated as a mental health emergency rather than a crime.
It also called for increased funding for counselling, treatment facilities and crisis services, while urging lawmakers to review existing criminal provisions and fully implement the National Mental Health Act to improve access to care for vulnerable Nigerians nationwide.
