Ex-Dangote Portuguese security chief dies after alleged arrest over resignation
A Portuguese security expert formerly employed by Dangote Industries Limited, José Miguel Gaspar Mateus, has died in a motorcycle accident in Portugal following alleged police harassment in Nigeria.
According to SaharaReporters, his lawyer, Fidel Albert, claimed Mateus suffered severe psychological distress after his arrest and detention in May 2026.
Albert alleged that the arrest followed Mateus’ resignation as Strategic Security Lead after securing better-paying employment in Abuja.
He accused billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote and his associates of instigating police action over allegations of sabotage.
The lawyer claimed Mateus was compelled to sign an indemnity agreement before officers searched his residence without finding incriminating evidence.
Albert said police investigations eventually cleared Mateus, who subsequently returned to Portugal.
“But tough though he was, Nigeria, this unique country of ours, found a way to break Miguel in ways he never imagined,” Albert wrote.
He said Mateus died after being struck by oncoming traffic while riding his motorcycle.
