Ilhan Omar seeks return of phone, laptop, passport seized by federal agents
US Representative Ilhan Omar has demanded the return of personal belongings confiscated during a federal raid on her Washington, DC, residence amid an ongoing immigration investigation.
According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, Omar’s lawyers made the demand in a Friday letter to federal prosecutors, describing the October 12 search as “neither justified nor lawful.”
Investigators reportedly seized her phone, laptop, notebooks and passport, while family text messages recovered from her sister’s phone allegedly helped authorities obtain the search warrant.
Several family members, including her sister, have reportedly received subpoenas.
Omar’s attorneys accused President Donald Trump’s administration of targeting a political opponent.
“This vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated criminal investigation into one of the President’s chief congressional critics violates Representative Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the separation of powers,” they wrote.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin described the investigation as a “strong case.”
Meanwhile, federal authorities are also examining Omar’s financial disclosures.
The allegations remain unproven, and investigators have not publicly established wrongdoing by the Minnesota Democrat, who is seeking re-election in November.
