Man City owner Sheikh Mansour linked to £120m Yacht Funding in 1MDB scandal
Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour has come under renewed scrutiny following revelations linking the funding of his luxury superyacht to Malaysia’s multibillion-dollar 1MDB financial scandal. According to The Athletic, more than €140 million (£120 million) allegedly traced to funds connected to the scandal was used to finance the construction of Mansour’s 482-foot yacht, Topaz.
The report said US investigators identified Mansour and two close associates as alleged co-conspirators in the scandal, which involved the embezzlement of billions of dollars from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund. However, Mansour was never charged with any crime, and he has not publicly commented on the allegations.
The revelations come amid Manchester City’s ongoing legal battle with the Premier League after an independent panel ruled that the club had benefited from disguised funding involving more than £920 million in overstated revenues and understated expenses.City deny wrongdoing and have appealed the ruling.
The report also highlighted connections between figures implicated in the 1MDB scandal and sponsorship arrangements involving Manchester City, raising fresh questions about the club’s financial dealings and its ownership.
