Presidency calls for death penalty for producers of fake products

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has called for the introduction of the death penalty for counterfeiters in Nigeria.

According to PM News, Onanuga made the call on Wednesday following the discovery of a suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks factory in Aba, Abia State, by NAFDAC.

“These counterfeiters certainly have no conscience. Until we start imposing a death penalty on them, they will never stop their nefarious activities,” he declared.

NAFDAC said its operatives uncovered the suspected illegal facility at No. 25 Omenazu Street, Aba, following credible intelligence.

The agency disclosed that the suspected operator fled, abandoning packaging materials, empty bottles, ethanol, sealing machines and other equipment.

It valued the recovered materials and facility components at over ₦500 million, warning about potential public health risks.

However, Onanuga’s proposal does not represent an official government policy or amendment to existing laws.

NAFDAC urged Nigerians to report suspected illegal manufacturing activities to authorities.
