Trump sues to block Alaska Senate result IF Republican loses…
President Donald Trump has said he ordered the Justice Department to file a lawsuit seeking to block certification of the U.S. Senate race in Alaska if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses, the Associated Press reports.
“I’m the one that said do it,” Trump told reporters on Friday as he landed for a campaign rally in Florida.
The suit, filed late Thursday, targets a second candidate named Dan Sullivan on the ballot. Republicans fear Daniel J. Sullivan, of Petersburg, could siphon votes from the incumbent in a close race against Democrat Mary Peltola. He says he ran on his own.
Peltola called the lawsuit “just flagrant, flagrant corruption in my opinion.” Sen. Lisa Murkowski also criticised it, writing, “The Department of Justice should never have filed this lawsuit.”
The Justice Department said it was ensuring the candidacy “does not undermine the integrity of Alaska’s election or the will of its voters.” The Alaska Supreme Court earlier rejected a bid to remove him from the ballot.
