Judge rules Trump administration unlawfully fired James Comey’s daughter
A federal judge has ruled that the US justice department illegally fired Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI director James Comey, BBC reports. Judge Jesse Furman ruled on Monday that the Trump administration must reinstate her and give her back pay from July until December 2025.
Comey, a federal prosecutor in New York, was dismissed in July 2025. She sued, arguing she was fired because of her father, a critic of President Donald Trump, and her perceived political affiliations. Furman said the dismissal violated the US Constitution and her right to a fair legal process, and that the attorney general can fire prosecutors but only “in a particular manner and only for certain reasons”.
The department said it disagreed and “will appeal in due course”. Comey’s lawyers said: “This hard-earned victory belongs to Ms Comey, to all civil servants, and to all fighting for the rule of law.” Court filings said former Attorney General Pam Bondi made the decision.
