Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties to reach Carabao cup quarter-finals
Liverpool knocked out Chelsea on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday, with Xabi Alonso and Jordan Henderson tasting defeat on their return to Anfield, the BBC reported.
The tie finished level in normal time after Morgan Rogers’ penalty for Chelsea, awarded for Ryan Gravenberch’s challenge on Moises Caicedo, was cancelled out by Cody Gakpo’s spot-kick three minutes later following a Wesley Fofana handball.
In the shootout, Valentin Barco hit the woodwork for Chelsea, but Kostas Tsimikas blazed over for Liverpool and Henderson levelled. Mike Penders saved from Gravenberch, but Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Emmanuel Emegha. After Joe Gomez scored, Fofana skied his effort over.
It was Liverpool’s fifth straight penalty win over Chelsea. They will host Andoni Iraola’s former club Bournemouth in the next round.
Iraola made seven changes from the win over Brighton, while Alonso made four, with Henderson starting in the absence of the suspended Cole Palmer and injured Joao Pedro. Maxence Lacroix went off injured before half-time.
Penders, who erred in Saturday’s 2-0 league defeat by Tottenham, made two fine saves in the second half. Alonso did not bring on Estevao.
