Israel election leaves Netanyahu under pressure as US patience wears thin
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing growing frustration in Washington following Israel’s inconclusive election, raising fresh questions about his political future and relations with the United States.
According to POLITICO, the election has intensified concerns among some US political circles about Netanyahu’s leadership, amid disagreements over Israel’s security priorities and the direction of its regional policies.
Although Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc fell short of securing a parliamentary majority, his Likud party emerged as the largest party, leaving him with a potential path to remain in power through coalition negotiations.
The results, however, reflect growing challenges for the longtime Israeli leader, whose government has faced criticism over the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks and the subsequent wars involving Israel.
Netanyahu’s political opponents have accused him of failing to take responsibility for the security failures surrounding the attacks, while he has defended his military campaigns as necessary to protect Israel.
The election also comes amid tensions over Israel’s international standing and Washington’s continued support for its ally.
Despite the setbacks, Netanyahu retains considerable backing among right-wing voters, many of whom view his hard-line security policies as essential to confronting regional threats.
The inconclusive result is expected to trigger weeks of political negotiations, with the possibility of another election if rival factions fail to form a stable government.
The outcome could also shape future US-Israel relations as Washington weighs its strategic interests in the Middle East.
