Forty House Democrats did not sign a letter condemning the federal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, according to a Newsweek comparison of the published signatories with the House Democratic roster.

The October 26 letter, led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, was signed by 175 members of Congress. It criticized the October 12 search of Omar’s Washington home and urged Attorney General Todd Blanche and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to refrain from further action that could affect the November 3 election. “We stand with Congresswoman Omar,” it states.

Democrats not listed as signers (excluding Omar):

  • Shomari Figures
  • Terri Sewell

Not signing the letter does not show that a lawmaker backs the investigation or disagrees with its critics, Newsweek reported. The outlet has contacted the offices of Omar, Pelosi, Hoyer, Cuellar, Golden and Gottheimer for comment and has yet to receive responses.

Federal investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father gave false information on immigration documents. The New York Times, citing current and former officials familiar with the investigation, reported Thursday that the federal inquiry into Omar is also examining whether her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was intended to help him obtain a green card.

Omar has denied wrongdoing, and no charges have been announced. She faces Republican John Nagel in the election.
