Neighbors remember Joseph Owusu: African caregiver found dead in garbage bag in New York is named
A 24-year-old Ghanaian man found dead in a garbage bag in Brooklyn was a “devout” churchgoer who played gospel music on the piano, neighbors told the New York Post.
Joseph Owusu was found around 9:20 a.m. October 30 outside a church at East 93rd Street and Avenue L in Canarsie, according to the Embassy of Ghana. Footage obtained by News 12 shows one person unloading the bag from the trunk of a white sedan while another occupant stood by, before abandoning it on the sidewalk.
Owusu lived in the Bronx’s Olinville section and worked as a caregiver for people with disabilities. He was a chorister at his local Methodist church, the embassy said.
“He could walk into a room and light up a room,” said neighbor Derrick Jackson, 55.
The embassy said: “He is remembered by the family as a beloved son and brother, and his tragic loss has left his family and community devastated.”
