Ahead of 2027 election, EFCC revisits 2006 corruption allegations against Atiku
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly reopened an investigation into alleged financial crimes involving former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar following a petition by former lawmaker Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma.
According to Vanguard, the petition, dated August 27, 2026, was received on September 1, prompting renewed investigative steps.
Agbonayinma subsequently appeared at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, where he adopted his petition and answered investigators’ questions.
The petition seeks a review of the commission’s September 2006 investigation and a February 2010 report by a United States Senate subcommittee.
“I want to thank Nigerians, the EFCC, and those praying for me in this struggle. The laws are meant for both the rich and the poor. After the EFCC has done a fantastic job, it should not be kept under the table,” Agbonayinma said.
He also disclosed petitioning US President Donald Trump over the allegations.
Atiku previously denied wrongdoing, maintaining that investigations had never resulted in his conviction.
