Amnesty International cautions Nigerian politicians against inciting, divisive remarks ahead of 2027 elections
Amnesty International Nigeria has warned politicians and their associates against making reckless, inciting and divisive remarks as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Sahara Reporters, the human rights organization said it was monitoring and documenting political statements made during ongoing campaigns. Amnesty expressed concern over inflammatory rhetoric, noting that previous Nigerian elections were characterised by ethnic slurs, threats, violence and political suppression.
The organization also raised concerns over the alleged use of state institutions against political opponents. It warned that political actors who undermine democratic principles and contribute to fear, division and violence must be held accountable as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.
