Army reportedly arrests Yobe politician over alleged ISWAP links, bribery attempt
Troops of the Nigerian Army have reportedly arrested Yobe politician Alhaji Wakiil Goni Mama, popularly known as Mai Salati, over alleged links to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
According to SaharaReporters, citing security analyst Zagazola Makama, the politician was arrested following allegations that he attempted to bribe soldiers to release suspected terrorist logistics suppliers.
Security sources said troops had earlier detained several suspects in Kanamma, Yobe State, before Mai Salati allegedly offered money to secure their freedom.
The soldiers reportedly rejected the offer and arrested him.
Military sources dismissed claims that the arrest was politically motivated or connected to his alleged defection from the All Progressives Congress to the African Democratic Congress.
The suspects were reportedly transferred towards Maiduguri for further interrogation.
Investigators are examining allegations that Mai Salati supplied logistics to ISWAP operatives in the North-East.
Authorities have yet to establish the allegations in court, while investigations continue to determine possible criminal charges against those involved.
